BOOK DESCRIPTION
Writing
Made Easy: Just the Basics by Timothy
Sharkey explains how to make
writing easy. It provides a “just-the-basics”
approach to writing and it eliminates the
complicated information that gets in the way.
It includes expert definitions and helpful
examples of what is really needed in writing –
with professional scholarship and a literary
sensibility – from an author who has taught
English 101 and English 102 classes in college
for over 15 years. Writing Made Easy: Just
the Basics is the culmination of Timothy
Sharkey’s 15-year effort to put the good
information about writing into one book.

WHY I WROTE
WRITING MADE EASY: JUST THE BASICS I had a hard
time finding useful information about writing when I
was a graduate student in college. I scrambled to
find useful information about writing as well when I
produced handouts for my students in the English 101
and English 102 classes I later taught in college.
The 800-page English 101 classroom textbooks I was
required to use contained surprisingly little
information about writing and included mostly
reading material involving comprehension. I was
frustrated with this. I knew early on that I would
have to compile a “just-the-basics” approach to
writing myself and include only the good information
about writing that I could find. Writing Made
Easy: Just the Basics is that book. It
contains only the essential and required information
about writing that people need to know to be able to
write successfully, and it eliminates the
complicated information that gets in the way.

write perfect sentences, understand confusing words,
use punctuation marks correctly, use rhetorical
techniques to increase their powers of description,
develop a heightened appreciation of words (such as
where words come from originally), use whom correctly
(if they want), improve their research skills online
(using Boolean operators, advanced Google searches,
and databases), present their research findings
professionally, become scholars (if they choose to
become scholars), argue positions well, articulate
the fallacies of other people’s arguments, enhance
their own speaking and reading skills (from learning
how to write successfully), and improve their
overall chances of success in life.
