INTERVIEW WITH
TIMOTHY SHARKEY Published on Smashwords 2022-04-30. Why did you write Writing
Made Easy: Just the Basics?
I wanted the general public to have access to my information about writing and not just the students in my English 101 and English 102 classes in college. I wanted to show people how easy writing can be. Who are your favorite authors? Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Alice Walker, Andre Gide What are your five favorite books, and why? I read Shakespeare very slowly—mainly—because Shakespeare used words with such precision and caring. What is your writing process? I think a lot, first. I write down a lot of notes. I start writing very rough drafts. I type them up on the computer, print them out, and edit the print-outs in a comfortable chair with my red ink pen. I type in my edited corrections into the computer, edit them again, and do this over and over until my text becomes simplified and smooth enough to stop. Describe your desk I sit back in a comfortable chair and write on a clipboard. What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you? Sharing information from my own author website and blog on social media sites. What is your e-reading device of choice? iPad How do you discover the ebooks you read? Goodreads, Gutenberg Project, Smashwords, Amazon Kindle, Apple Books How do you approach cover design? I study my favorite book covers. I take screenshots of them. I review them all and try to find similarities between the ones I like. This narrows down my preferences and spawns new creativity. Research in graphic design is very important—to see what works and what doesn't. I then design my own covers in Affinity Photo. |
